BUSAN, KOREA

Busan (Officially Busan Metropolitan City), formerly spelled Pusan, is South Korea's second largest metropolis after Seoul, with a population of around 3.6 million, as of 2010. It is the largest port city in South Korea and the fifth largest port in the world. The city is located on the south-eastern most tip of the Korean peninsula and faces the Korea Strait. The most densely built up areas of the city are situated in a number of narrow valleys between the Nakdong River and Suyeong River, with mountains separating some of the districts. It is quite interesting to be standing on a small mountain after hiking and peer down to the city valley below, with an array of green mountains surrounding. It is a city within mountains. Administratively, it is designated as a Metropolitan City. The Busan metropolitan area is divided into 15 major administrative districts and a single county.

Busan was the host city of the 2002 Asian Games and APEC 2005 Korea. It was also one of the host cities for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and is a center for international conventions in Korea. On November 14, 2005, the city officially announced its bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics Games.

Busan is home to the world's largest department store, the Shinsegae in Centum City (green subway line stop 106) and is pursuing a large number of multi-skyscraper projects, including the 110-floor, 510m-supertall Lotte Super Tower, which is slated to become the world's third tallest building in 2013, after Burj Khalifa in Dubai and 1 World Trade Center in New York City, also expected to be completed in 2013.

Busan is home of the famous Haeundae beach, located in the Haeundae district, a very popular area for foreign English teachers. During summer months the beach can be quite populated with literally wall to wall people and the vast numbers of large sun umbrellas. It is a great place to walk just about any time of year and enjoy the view. Also located on the street just in front of the beach, are numbers of cafes, restaurants and pubs.

Busan is large enough to enjoy a great city experience and for those who do not want too large or too small of a city, it is ideal. It has just about anything modern cities today have. Art and museums, wonderful and excellent array of international food, buffets, cinemas, department stores, outdoor shopping (Nampodong red subway line 111), beaches, night clubs, international film festivals, musicals, symphonies, ballets, plays, live sports such as baseball and soccer and very friendly and helpful locals.
