The China University C. V. Advantage
by Clair Lasater
When the wind blows, even the turkeys fly.
East Coast saying
One advantage of hopping on a plane to Shanghai, to
teach college in China, is C. V. enhancement. Those grad-
uates who can't seem to even get started teaching in U. S.
academe -- there is really no way, for most to get hired on
-- are sure to obtain a post working at a Chinese college or
university. Many hundreds of these jobs are begging takers,
each school year.
Even those with no graduate degree get these plums. A
four-year degree of any sort will do it, because China current-
ly values Western college graduates with native accents.
Those taken aboard in a China college or university
will have a free furnished, unshared apartment, a salary,
and will lecture only 12, 14, 16, 18, or 20 hours a week.
"Oh, another guy with a master's degree, driving a cab,"
commented one of my fares, as I drove him to class, at a
world-famous university. (I had told him on the way, about
my M. A.) Of course, I quite envied the man.
Months later, I read about TEFL, (teaching English as
a foreign language), and internet-applied for a job in
China. I was hired immediately.
(For direct telephone and e-mail contact with the
offices hiring, at each of over 100 colleges and universities,
see www.chinatefl.com. On this site, click "Teach in China"
at the top. At www.coachdevelop.com, click "China EFL Jobs"
at the top of the homepage, to get access to direct contact
with almost all of the 250 colleges, universities, high
schools, and private academies listed.)
Now, I'm entering year ten of lecturing Writing, and
Spoken English, in the P. R. C. My C. V. at this point,
impresses me profoundly. Hainan University, Shunde
Polytechnic, the Hunan University of Science and Engineering,
and Maoming University cited on my resume do look better to
me, and to a potential employer, than, "Ace Cab," and
"ice cream truck."
