POSSIBLE ESL JOB TYPES IN CHINA
Private Language Schools
Throughout China there is a growing number of private language schools, similar to Korea, Japan and other countries. With a growing need for English as a global second language comes a growth in ESL schools in the private sector. There has been a steady increase in affluence and more families being able to afford these schools. You will find schools for adults and children or possibly combined. Be sure and check over a contract well before entering a work agreement with the school, to ensure pay and benefits are standard.
Public Schools
Public school positions are available in China and start in September. It is best to apply early for the positions, in February-March, or sometimes even by April may still be possible. The number of students per class can be 45+, more than private schools. You will also usually have more paid vacation in public schools as well.
Universities
Either public or private, you may find a great job, especially within the public Universities. Students in these schools are supposed to be the top elite as only a small percentage of China¡¯s students are received with these learning institutes. The rest may attend private Universities or study abroad. That is not to say these students of private Universities will not also be excellent and a possibly a joy to teach. It makes a difference when you teach students who actually want to learn and can reciprocate a delivered lesson from their instructor.
Salaries and hours worked tend to be less compared with private ESL schools and leaves one more time for other endeavors, like enjoying life in China, research, study, learn Chinese or private lessons.
Private Lessons
It is uncertain to Dom¡¯s ESL Cafe whether China allows ESL teachers to do private lessons or not. But the popular premise of word of mouth and research suggests most likely it is fine, unlike South Korea for example, where special school permission is needed and then corroborated by immigration and sometimes not granted. In China a teacher may probably be able to make some extra descent money doing private lessons. Getting private lessons may often occur as a result of being asked by a local, or refer to online part-time job resources.
International Schools
China offers teaching positions for qualified and certified teachers to teach school curriculum and subjects other
than ESL.
