China can be amazing and a mind blowing experience. It’s wonderful and exciting cities, culture, food and more can make China a great place to live and teach. As with any place, this mostly depends on you and what you make of it. It may also depend on which area of China you live in. For me, Shanghai was an excellent city to visit, and I could see myself living there for at least a year and teaching English. It has a very modern atmosphere and very cosmopolitan. As a foreign English teacher you will not be so noticed and stand out as much compared with the Chinese countryside, where many locals will still give foreigners glances. Beijing offers a more traditional China with many interesting cultural sites.

As in teaching in any overseas country, especially when first arriving you will need patience to adapt and feel comfortable in your new environment. In China teaching jobs are plentiful but finding a professional, organized situation can be challenging. Please ask as many questions as possible when being hired from your country via phone and email. Get the facts about any new job in any country and prepare as much as possible. You may even want to venture to China and find a job on location and meet new schools in person, which requires money and time and can be difficult landing in a new country with no job security lined up. More on finding the right school here. In Shanghai I have met several English teachers who have been living and teaching there for several years and enjoy it. Some of the teachers I have met enjoyed living and teaching in Beijing as well.
